In drawing inspiration from her experiences as a US immigrant, Susu creates dreamlike paintings that blur the familiar with foreign, the mundane with surreal. Following a rigorous, traditional training background in Beijing, Susu moved to Pittsburgh, PA to study at Carnegie Mellon University where she earned her MFA in Scenic Design from the School of Drama. While studying, a life-threatening accident occurred, causing Susu to reevaluate her relationship with painting, vowing to pursue it full time after graduation. Susu has stuck to her promise and works everyday in her Wilkinsburg studio, creating allegory-rich work that plays with context, both culturally with the images she borrows and compositionally within the paintings themselves.
